But if you choose this path, you’ll likely need to use either an uncommon structure or next-level craft to create a stand-out essay. While this sounds simple, the quality of your essay will depend on the strength of your examples and your insights. A montage essay can come together in many different ways. You can apply to a college that offers rolling admissionâ€"sometimes as late as the summer after your senior year. You can go to a community college and then transferâ€"sometimes after a semester, but usually after a year. It is rare, but it does happen, which is why we suggest that you apply to a mix of reach, good chance, and safety schools. We have updated our Privacy Policy on 5/23/2018. Like the faint scent of mustard oil in my hair, the war followed me to the United States. Here, I was the villain, responsible for causing pain. In the streets, in school, and in Baba’s taxi cab, my family and I were equated with the same Taliban who had pillaged our neighborhood and preyed on our loved ones. Okay, this isn’t necessarily a perfect way to outline an essay. You may not want to spend an entire paragraph describing your feelings, for example, or you may choose to describe your needs in just one sentence. However, the sideways Feelings and Needs chart can help you think about how the chronology of your experiences might translate into a personal statement. If you’re interested in writing about challenges, I highly recommend using the Narrative Structure. Doctor Jan is a Ph.D. qualified university lecturer at a leading UK university with over 30 years experience in Higher Education. But I’m working towards a war-free life, internally and externally, for me and the individuals who can share in my experiences, for my family, and for the forgotten Pashtun tribes from which I hail. War has taught me to recognize the power of representation, to find courage in vulnerability, and best of all, to celebrate humor. Within a few weeks, my panel and interview were accessible worldwide, watched by my peers in school, and family thousands of miles away in Pakistan. Although the idea of being so vulnerable initially made me nervous, I soon realized that this vulnerability was essential to my growth. Well-known examples from movies include the “training” montages from Mulan, Rocky, or Footloose, or the “falling in love” montage from most romantic comedies. In just a few minutes, we learn the entire history of Carl and Ellie’s relationship. One purpose is to communicate a lot of information fast.

17 Things To Write About

17 Things To Write About You’ll recall a Type A essay discusses a potential career aspiration, whereas a Type C essay ending may be a bit more open-ended. A description of these extracurricular activities may have sounded like a laundry-list of the author’s accomplishments. While I attend GS at Meredith College for Natural Science, the lessons learned and experiences gained extend far beyond physics concepts, serial dilutions, and toxicity. I learn to trust myself to have difficult yet necessary conversations about the political and economic climate. First, let me share an example of how I helped one student find her essay thread, then I’ll offer you some exercises to help you find your own. I also worked to apply myself constructively in other ways. I worked hard and took my grades from Bs and Cs to consecutive straight A’s. I shattered my school’s 1ooM breaststroke record, and learned how to play the clarinet, saxophone, and the oboe. As undocumented immigrants and with little to no family around us, we had to rely on each other. Fearing that any disclosure of our status would risk deportation, we kept to ourselves when dealing with any financial and medical issues. I avoided going on certain school trips, and at times I was discouraged to even meet new people. I felt isolated and at times disillusioned; my grades started to slip. One important difference between the Type A and Type C essays is the ending. Styled in a t-shirt, shorts, and a worn, dark green lanyard, I sprint across the quad from the elective ‘Speaking Arabic through the Rassias Method’ to ‘Knitting Nirvana’. This afternoon is just one of many at Governor’s School East, where I have been transformed from a high school student into a philosopher, a thinker, and an avid learner. They left like birds; laughing one minute and in a better place the next. Using equipment that a high school student could only dream of using, I was able to map apoptosis versus necrosis in HeLa cells, a cervical cancer line, after treating them with curcumin-bound nanoparticles. Using flow cytometry to excite each individually suspended cell with a laser, the scattered light from the cells helped to determine which cells were living, had died from apoptosis or had died from necrosis. Using this collected data, it was possible to determine if the curcumin and/or the nanoparticles had played any significant role on the cervical cancer cells. Later, I was able to image cells in 4D through con-focal microscopy. Every time news of a terror attack spread, I could hear the whispers, visualize the stares. Instead of mourning victims of horrible crimes, I felt personally responsible, only capable of focusing on my guilt. The war had manifested itself in my racing thoughts and bitten nails when I decided that I couldn’t, and wouldn’t, let it win. Nowadays, many students will rely on the Internet over books to find the information they need. Plus, I not only became the first student in my school to pass the AP Physics 1 exam, I’m currently pioneering my school’s first AP Physics 2 course ever. Over time, however, I grew determined to improve the quality of life for my family and myself. From growing HeLa cells to trying to kill them with different compounds, I was able to gain the hands-on experience necessary for me to realize once again why I love science. This past summer, I had the privilege of participating in the University of Notre Dame’s Research Experience for Undergraduates program . How has cooking taught you about “accountability,” for example, or “social change”? We’ve already read the essay on how cooking helped the author become more aware of his health. An essay on how cooking allowed the author to become more accountable or socially aware would be less common. War followed me to freshman year of high school when I wanted more than anything to start new and check off to-dos in my bullet journal. But because she’s naming other stickers (which connects them to the essay’s thematic thread), she basically gets to name-drop those activities while showing other parts of her life. If you wrote “chef,” for example, push yourself beyond the common value of “health” and strive for unexpected values.

The 5 Biggest Mistakes In College Admissions Essays

The 5 Biggest Mistakes In College Admissions Essays College essay writing fills most students with apprehension and dread. English teachers have the best intentions when helping students with college essays, but they don’t always understand that a great English essay does not always make a great college essay. It is fine to break out of the 5 paragraph mold for a college essay, and it needs to tell about the applicant. The college essay often frightens students because they think it has to be about some extraordinary event and they may not have something momentous to write aboutâ€"that is OK. Actually, the best college essays I have read have been about mundane, everyday life. What made them great is that the students showed who they were through their writing. Tips for writing an effective college admissions essay are essentially the same for all students. You definitely don’t want to put the readers to sleep! You have surely had certain life experiences which will provide interesting material for your essay â€" even things which you yourself take for granted. So many students think that they “know” what colleges want from an applicant, and this can have a big influence over their essays. Students will abuse the thesaurus and write about strange topics in an effort to impress and stand out. Instead of writing what you think the admissions office wants to read, write about what you want them to know. Again, the essay is a great space to reveal something new about you, so stand out by being yourself and showing another side of you as a person or student. With upwards of 25 or more essays to write for a balanced college list of schools, it’s tempting for students to repurpose essays across applications if the prompts are similar. Consider how the story you have to tell would be perceived by someone else who has never before heard that story. Write analytically, rather than merely descriptively. Descriptive writing is a factual account of a topic or event, simply telling what happened. Analytical writing will pose or answer questions, make comparisons, or present and defend viewpoints. Rather than just state what happened, an analytical approach will explain and interpret events. What is your interpretation of what transpired? How do/did you feel about the topic about which you are writing? In most cases, you will be required to limit the essay to a certain number of characters or words. I always suggest that students not worry too much about this limitation to begin with â€" just get your ideas written down . After that, some strategic editing can be done to trim the fat off and get the essay down to the required size. Limit the number of people that you ask to review your essay. Someone else can read your work for technical accuracy but too much revision removes your personality and creativity. REMEMBER that everything you write, each essay or short answer will be read and evaluated. Your essays are your only true voice in the application process. Although this task may seem daunting when you think about it, it inevitably results in a more concise, streamlined presentation of your concept. Finally, make sure that the essay does not have glaring errors in spelling, sentence structure, and paragraph formulation. College application essays are important to winning over the admissions officers. Reading other successful admissions essays is the best way to learn how to write a college application essay. In fact, try to make it as correct as possible. Besides appearing very careless, these kinds of errors can actually interfere with the ability of the reader to understand your point. As students write their essays, it might help to keep in mind why colleges ask them for these writing samples in the first place. GradeSaver provides the best sample college application essays in this premium content section. Many were written by students of Ivy League colleges. We have been mentioned in the Washington Post, the Economist, and other papers around the world for our exceptional college essays. The style and tone of a college essay are very different from most essays and research papers you write in school. So, often students aren’t sure exactly what to aim for when writing their essays. A quick and easy remedy is to read example essays written by successful applicants.

How To Finish A College

How To Finish A College A great college essay is an essay that is interesting, pithy and well written. You want both to keep the reader’s attention and to make the reader want you to be a member of the next freshman class at the reader’s college. In fact, more than one professional points out that students should not have already reached their writing potential before entering college. I know parents who believe kids who can’t sit down and write essays themselves aren’t ready for four-year college. Jager-Hyman said there are some who believe a 17-year-old need only “put one foot in front of the other” and apply himself to complete this task. But in reality, many otherwise-capable teens have no clue where to start. The B+ Grades A+ College Application author says, however, that some essays are afforded 20 minutes, and others just a perfunctory glance. Students will be accepted “if the student’s numbers fit the academic profile of the institution,” she says. In other words, an outstanding essay may tip the scales. Some teens think their college essay, or “personal statement,” will determine their entire future, and others bristle and balk when asked to finally write it, believing it will never be read. A good college essay is one that stays with the reader after he or she finishes reading it, maybe even thinking about it later that day, or the next day. When possible, select a topic that engages you and is one you are interested in addressing. It is important that your voice comes through and that the reader feels he or she has had an opportunity to experience a more personal facet of your character and your unique perspective. Avoid cliches at all cost and never write what you think someone wants to hear. When you are finished with the essay, read it out loud and carefully listen to the content, grammar, and pay attention to spelling or word glitches. When you’re responding to the “Why Us” prompt, you’re telling them exactly how an education there will shape your intellectual and professional journey. This essay isn’t just about the college; it’s about you, too. Many college admissions counselors have said that the more unique your essay â€" the content and writing style â€" the more captivating it is to read. To the college essay admissions process I bring skills honed as a television writer, a screenwriter, and a journalist. Entering my ninth year, I have worked with nearly 400 bright, motivated, and exceptional applicants who each year are accepted to T10 colleges and universities. I love what I do and am immeasurably proud of every applicant I work with and their results. This is your chance to make your application stand out and your one opportunity to have a real voice appear in the file. Tell the reader something about yourself that might not be included in the rest of the application. A great college essay is one in which the student’s voice and though process comes through clearly. It should be consistent with the rest of the application and showcase an aspect of the student not highlighted in the rest of the application. It is also well written and grammatically correct. Over the years, students who tell me they absolutely love to write have said they struggle with the application essay. So if you’ve been biting your nails or tearing your hair out even a little, you’re not alone. A more concrete reason for this prompt is that colleges want to have a high yield, the ratio of accepted students who end up attending. Yield factors into rankings in sources like U.S. News and World Report and contribute to the overall reputation of the school. Free writing, ideally done with pen and paper instead of on the computer, is an exercise in opening the creative mind and letting ideas flow. Knowing this, you will be more relaxed and inspired as you write. Whether you’re prompted to write about a formative experience, why you think you’d be a good fit for the university or about a person who has influenced you greatly, answer the question honestly. Don’t just write what you think the admissions office wants to hear. Very often they are inundated with essays that cater to “what they want to hear,” making such essays exactly what they don’t want to hear. See how the first relays information in apassivevoice, while the second paints anactivepicture? Feel free to start out by painting a vibrant picture of yourself too! This essay is one way for them to gauge how likely you are to attend and help them attain a high yield. If you seem genuinely passionate about the college, then they can assume you’re more likely to matriculate if offered a spot in the freshman class. College admissions committees are looking to build a student body that will contribute to and sustain the community. They want to attract students and eventual alumni who are innovators and creators, and they want to have a hand in shaping those minds.

Writing Tips And Techniques For Your College Essay

Writing Tips And Techniques For Your College Essay If you’re asked to write why you want to attend a certain college or program, do your research. Colleges will see if you just read the first paragraph of a webpage or if you really looked. When citing a desire to participate in a certain club or program, make sure you can actually participate in it. For example, don’t write about wanting to be part of a program only for grad students; save this for your graduate school application. Sample essays can provide you with some great inspiration, and valuable insights into how to write a great essay. When parents get too involved, the stories do not sound genuine. When a parent gets too involved, the story does not sound like an essay written by a 17-year-old student. We can tell when the student’s voice is missing; the colleges can tell too. And of course, it goes without saying that you should NEVER copy or imitate someone else’s essay. If you try to make your essay sound like someone else’s, it will end up sounding fake and awkward, and will NOT work to your advantage. Once you’re past a college’s GPA and test score criteria, your college essays become one of the most important elements of your application. There is no way to determine a typical scenario regarding a college’s method for reviewing applications. In all cases at least one admissions officer will look at your essay. If a school uses an admissions committee the number could jump to three or more. In any case, what YOU can control is how well your essay describes who you are and gives the admissions person a chance to see things in you that will be an asset to the school. Every work that came to us is done to the end and approved by the teacher. I would encourage students to think about how participating in Outward Bound impacted them, specifically. Anyone who completes an Outward Bound expeditioncould say that they were challenged, that they weren’t sure they could do it, but on looking back, they feel proud of what they’ve accomplished. The real questions to ask are, why was it challenging for you, personally? What about this makes you feel proud, and how will you carry this into the next part of your life? Whether you write about it in your essay, or just list it as one of your activities, sharing the influence it has had on you, personally, will be much more impactful. Our team can also correct papers even after sending it to the instructor â€" there may be points that need to be corrected. But basically, all essays are done in a quality manner and it does not require adjustment in the future. Our premium team is divided into groups, each of which is engaged in certain areas in writing essays. The client can get a college essay write expert, as well as writing essays for universities, postgraduate studies or schools. Any degree of the workload with studies gives a bad effect on your health so we also take care of this. We release you from an essay so that each of our clients can choose a few hours of rest. You have important things to do and we will give you more free time. Sharing that you participated in an Outward Bound program will help colleges understand how you’re spending your time outside the classroom. But you also have the opportunity to articulate to colleges why this experience is worth mentioning. There is a funny article in “The Daily Beast” by Kristina Dell that shares the anecdotes of college admissions counselors from this year’s record batch of applications. Many of the anecdotes revolve around silly or even comical things students do during the course of the college admissions process. The majority of these anecdotes are drawn from ridiculous mistakes college applicants make in their college essays. If you were to take bets on the percentage of essays read by college admissions personnel, I’d guess that it would be in the high 90’s. An essay is an important part of sharing who you are with a school. With increased competition for admission, the essay has become an important factor in consideration of your admissibility to a school. So if a school requires an essay it is VERY likely to be read. If a school has a writing section in their supplement to the Common Application you can rest assured that ALL of that writing is evaluated by admissions officers. Do your best and assume that it WILL be read and that it WILL have a bearing on your admission chances. If you visit our website and ask to write my essay for me, then we could not refuse you. Our service was created so that all students can find professional help in writing essays here. We created our company to help those who are too busy with their studies and do not have free time for composing papers. However, be careful not to get so caught up reading other peoples’ essays that you neglect to start your own. It’s also easy to fall into the comparison trap and begin worrying that your essays will never be as good as these examples. Remember that the sample essays colleges are posting are the BEST essays from among the thousands of students they admit. So, most accepted students’ essays are not this exceptional.

Put The Personal Back In The College Essay

Put The Personal Back In The College Essay I cooked, Jose cleaned, I dressed Fernando, Jose put him to bed. This is a great way to figure out the “bones” (i.e. structure) of your essay. A rectangular black and red sticker displaying the theme of the 2017 event. For years I’ve been interested in the street artists and musicians in downtown Austin who are so unapologetically themselves. A montage essay can come together in many different ways. For the purposes of this section, your future goal or career is the theme that connects all the parts of your story. The Type D essay section delves more deeply into other ways of weaving thematic threads. For a brief period of time the quality of our lives slowly started to improve as our soon-to-be step-dad became an integral part of our family. He paid attention to the needs of my mom, my brother, and me. But our prosperity was short-lived as my step dad’s chronic alcoholism became more and more recurrent. When I was eight, my younger brother Fernando’s birth complicated things even further. As my step-dad slipped away, my mom continued working, and Fernando’s care was left to Jose and me. Please don’t simply use their answers as your own; allow their replies to inspire your brainstorming process. Go to a college's website and click on a major or group of majors that interest you. Sometimes they’ll briefly summarize a major in terms of what skills it will impart or what jobs it might lead to. Students are often surprised to discover how broadly major-related skills can apply. But if you choose this path, you’ll likely need to use either an uncommon structure or next-level craft to create a stand-out essay. To keep things simple, one example and one insight per paragraph. Help the reader understand which experiences have shaped the qualities you’ve listed. First, it’ll make for a much more interesting story; second, it’ll show that you’ve truly developed these qualities. Ask three people in this profession what unexpected qualities, values, or skills prepared them for their careers. As a result, I’ve become more open-minded and appreciative of unconventional lifestyles. TED gives me the opportunity to help other youth understand new perspectives, by exposing them to the diversity of Austin where culture is created, not just consumed. Once you’ve written down your qualities, examples, and at least 1-2 insights, try outlining your essay. For the Type A essay, give us a sense of your vision, even if you don’t name your precise career. In The Birth of Sher Khan essay above, for example, you can track both. I never fully escaped war; it’s evident in the chills that run down my spine whenever an untimely call reaches us from family members in Pakistan and in the funerals still playing on Geo News. Complete the brainstorming exercises, as these will help no matter which structure you choose. Take special care to complete the Feelings and Needs Exercise, as it will help you outline your essay. Another is to allow you to share a lot of different kinds of information, as the example essay below shows. For this essay type, I recommend the Montage Structure. A montage is, simply put, a series of moments or story events connected by a common thematic thread. You may also choose to write about the struggles you’ve faced without getting into all the details. Saying, for example, that you experienced verbal abuse from your father, for example, may be enough; you don’t necessarily need to share the specifics. Well-known examples from movies include the “training” montages from Mulan, Rocky, or Footloose, or the “falling in love” montage from most romantic comedies. In just a few minutes, we learn the entire history of Carl and Ellie’s relationship. One purpose is to communicate a lot of information fast.

How To Write A Winning College Application Essay

How To Write A Winning College Application Essay With a wealth of experience as a writer, journalist, and educator, Robert Schwartz has written for all four major television networks. In the feature film world he has written or rewritten screenplays for all of the major movie studios. DON’T let your tutor or your teacher or your parents take over your essay. The resulting essay will not reflect you and thus will not accomplish its goal, no matter how “good” it seems to be. The outline is not for writing perfect sentences but rather for putting your ideas in the right sequence. Make sure you arrange your thoughts so that they make sense and lead one into the other. Take a notebook and write a page or two on each of your possible subjects. Where were the ideas pouring out and where were they feeling stuck? Let this exercise be the compass that points you in the direction of your topic. An introduction like this is colorful and intriguing. It gives the reader a sense of expectation and excitement, without giving too much away from the beginning. Writers live by the rule of “in medias res,” or starting in the middle. The conclusion finishes off the whole essay by nodding towards what came before without being repetitive and summarizing the takeaway. Reveal an awareness of instructional style and independent learning opportunities. Risk-taking is an interesting element of creative writing. Done well, it can lift your presentation from the mundane and safe to the provocative and insightful. Finally, if you can find pretty much all the reasons you give through a cursory look at the website or brochure, that’s a sign that it’s time to dive a little deeper. The “Why this college” or “Why us” prompts are fairly common. I don’t think that originality should come at the expense of honesty. If you’re worried that your essay topic is a bit run-of-the-mill, you have two options. The first is to find another topic that feels authentic to you. The second is to find a unique angle within the topic. DON’T be pretentious or overly formal â€"this is not the time to play the role of Albert Einstein or Mother Teresa if that’s not who you are. Resist the temptation to portray yourself as a saint with a 4.0â€"you’re better off presenting the real you. DO be yourself â€" your essay should sound as if it could have been written by no one else. You don’t have to solely focus on academics, although you should make them a main point of your essay. You can also include traditions, extracurricular activities, and the campus itself. Yes, Yale is very prestigious and consistently ranks among the top three universities in U.S. Your familial connections may also factor in, but they shouldn’t be your sole reason for applying. Submit it, and treat yourself to something nice â€" like your favorite film, a run, quality time with your dog or whatever it is that you enjoy. Ask people you trust for their feedback, but don’t let anyone else tell you how you should write it. This is your story, or some small but significant part of it, as told or reflected upon by you. is a published poet and a high school English teacher. She has a BA in English from Skidmore College and an MFA from the Warren Wilson Program for Writers, where she studied poetry. Before earning her graduate degree, she attended the New York Summer Writers Institute, The Breadloaf Writers Conference, and the Five Powers of Poetry Conference for Teachers. You don’t have to make changes based on everyone’s comments, but give them all some careful thought and try to imagine how the essay would look if you made each change. Even if you didn’t visit, you can still establish a strong connection to the school. In that case, you might share a story about why you’re interested in studying a certain program that you can only find there â€" grounding it in an anecdote from your past â€" or a professor you want to study with.

How To Write A Research Paper Title

How To Write A Research Paper Title I decided to create the first high school branch of the organization; I liked its unique way of approaching health and social issues. Rather than just raising money and channeling it through third parties, each branch “adopts” one village and travels there to provide for its basic needs. As branch president, I organize events from small stands at public gatherings to 60-person dinner fundraisers in order to raise both money and awareness. I now understand surgeons to be much more complex practitioners of medicine, and I am certain that this is the field for me. Never before had I seen anything this gruesomeâ€"as even open surgery paled in comparison. Doctors in the operating room are calm, cool, and collected, making textbook incisions with machine-like, detached precision. It is a profession founded solely on skill and techniqueâ€"or so I thought. This grisly experience exposed an entirely different side of this profession I hope to pursue. I couldn’t believe that such a solvable issue could be so severe at the timeâ€"so I began to explore. This completely different perspective broadened my understanding of the surgical field and changed my initial perception of who and what a surgeon was. I not only want to help those who are ill and injured, but also to be entrusted with difficult decisions the occupation entails. Discovering that surgery is also a moral vocation beyond the generic application of a trained skill set encouraged me. Each one of us leaves find a legacy as we for fill our purpose in life. I believe my purpose as a student is to encourage others to become active community members and motivate them to reach new heights. The exploration led me to the African Disease Prevention Project , a non-profit organization associated with several universities. Luckily, my family managed to drive me several hours away to an urban hospital, where I was treated. Yellow fever shouldn’t be fatal, but in Africa it often is. I’ve learned how to encourage my peers to meet deadlines, to work around 30 different schedules at once, and to give presentations convincing people why my organization is worth their donation. But overall, ADPP has taught me that small changes can have immense impacts. My branch has helped raise almost $3,000 to build water sanitation plants, construct medical clinics, and develop health education programs in the small village of Zwedru. The difference between ADPP and most other organizations is its emphasis on the basics and making changes that last. We never resell papers; they are written from scratch. In this way, you can be sure that your paper will be unique. They left like birds; laughing one minute and in a better place the next. Students receive papers from us written with an individual approach. I will not waste time for my life is already in flux. Yet I've realized that life is fickler than I had imagined; it can disappear or change at any time. Several of my family members left this world in one last beating symphony; heart attacks seem to be a trend in my family. Working towards those changes to solve real life problems is what excites me. When I was thirteen and visiting Liberia, I contracted what turned out to be yellow fever. So, I will forgive and forget, love and inspire, experience and satire, laugh and cry, accomplish and fail, live and die. This is how I want to live my life, with this optimistic attitude that every day is a second chance. All the time, we have the opportunity to renew our perspective on life, to correct our mistakes, and to simply move on. Like the phoenix I will continue to rise from the ashes, experienced and renewed.

The Rise or Fall of Humanity Comparing The Time Machine in Fiction and Film - Literature Essay Samples

In The Time Machine, H. G. Wells takes on the impossible task of imagining the future of our world. The story features the Time Traveler (George), the main character of the story, and his many adventures in the year 802,701 A.D. Later in 1960 Wells’ crazy prophecy was transformed into a film. However, when the time came to adapt the book into a movie many changes had to be made to the plot of the story so that the audience could understand the chain of events that take place. Some of the plot discrepancies took place in Weena’s river scene, the talking rings scene, Weena’s death, and the Eloi rescue mission from the Morlocks. Each change was made with clear intent, and the most crucial of these differences depart from Wellss pessimistic tone while preserving the key themes of the original text. First, we see differences in the plot between Weena’s near drowning experience at the river, featured in the book and the movie. At this time in the movie, George (the time traveler) had just arrived in the future and he came across the Eloi at the river. This was the first time in the movie that George had ever seen the Eloi whereas in the book George had met some of the Eloi at the sphinx statue when he first arrived. Also in the movie, George saves Weena on his first day in the future, while in the book the time traveler rescues Weena on his third day. In the book the time traveler observes, â€Å"Well, on the third day of my visitto rescue the weakly crying little thing which was drowning†¦ I caught the poor mite and drew her safe to land†¦ found that her name was Weena† (Wells 43). This shows that the director chose to change the order of the events in the movie. He chose to change this because on the first few days of George’s visit to the future, he does a lot of thinking and inquiring to himself about the strange world that the Eloi live in and so to make the movie more interesting the director chose to skip some of the dialog that took place in the book. This was a good decision on the director’s part because it immediately drew the audience in and set up Weena as George’s love interest which came into play later in the film. Next, another plot discrepancy between the book and the movie is the talking rings scene. In the book George cannot understand the language of the Eloi so as a result he has to figure out how the Eloi’s society is constructed, by himself. In the book George asserts, â€Å"I determined to make a resolute attempt to learn the speech of these new men of mine† (Wells 27). However, in the film the Eloi speak English so George is free to ask them questions about their lives and social structure. Still, the Eloi are uneducated so they don’t understand why they don’t have to work and why there are no older people. As a result, the director added the talking ring scene, in which George and Weena visit what appears to be a museum and listen to rings that talk when you spin them. The rings act as a historian. Weena doesn’t understand this, but George does. The rings make it so George doesn’t have to figure out the Eloi’s society on his own, becau se the rings give him all the answers. The rings verify, â€Å"I am the last who remembers how each of us, man and woman made his own decision. Some chose to take refuge in the great caverns, and find a new way of life far below the earths surface. The rest of us decided to take our chances in the sunlight† (The Time Machine). This allows George to learn of the relationship between the Eloi and the Morlocks and how the future world was divided. The director added this scene because it effectively cut a significant amount of time out of the plot of the book where George was trying to figure this out, and allowed the audience to understand the relationship between the Eloi and the Morlocks clearly, but in a short amount of time. Weena’s death was another difference that was made clear when comparing the book, to the movie. In the book, Weena and George are wandering through the forest in the dark when Morlocks come across them. George escapes the Morlocks, but Weena dies in the process. The Time Traveler declares, â€Å"I felt the intensest wretchedness for the horrible death of little Weena† (Wells 78). This shows how much George cared for Weena, because she was his only friend in the future. It also gives George an air of loneliness which is not seen in the movie. This is largely because the director of the film chose to have Weena live in the movie. This drastically changed George’s motive and with it, the plot of the movie. Had Weena not lived, George would not have been so motivated to return to the future and rebuild the Eloi’s society, as he is in the movie. Filby (one of George’s friends) implores, â€Å"I think I understand. You see the imprint? This is where the time machine originally stood. The Morlocks moved it. They dragged it across the lawn†¦ right into the sphinx. Right there. Weena was standing here when he last saw her† (The Time Machine). This proves that part of the reason George wished to return was because of Weena, whereas in the book it appears that George wishes to return because he was further curious about what the future held. Again the director chose wisely when he had Weena remain alive because as a result of this the movie’s tone turns into one of change, reviving humanity and rebuilding the future society. Finally, we are able to see further discrepancies of the book and movie through the Eloi rescue mission from the Morlocks which is carried out in the movie version of The Time Machine. In the movie an alarm sounds and all the Eloi converge to the sphinx where some are taken inside to become food for the Morlocks. Weena is one of the Eloi taken, so George goes in after her where he fights the Morlocks and in the end, defeats them while restoring the Eloi to the surface. None of this took place in the book. In H. G. Wells’ rendition the Time Traveler endorses, â€Å"As I approached the pedestal of the sphinx I found the bronze valves were open†¦ I stepped through the bronze frame and up to the Time Machine† (Wells 80-81). This tells us that the Time Traveler simply planned on leaving the future. He planned to leave the Eloi to fend for themselves and to let the Morlocks continue on with their cannibalism. He believed that humanity was past saving. This is very differ ent from the movie because in the movie, George is looking to save the Eloi and exterminate the Morlocks, then to help the Eloi start fresh afterwards. Filby corroborates, â€Å"so he could appear outside the sphinx again†¦ and help the Eloi build a new world† (The Time Machine). The director chose to change the dismal and hopeless mood of H. G. Wells’ book into a positive, optimistic, better-times-in-the-future mood. He succeeded in doing this and with it he created a magnificent film that encourages viewers not to give up on humanity. It’s almost impossible to recreate a book into a movie and not have some alterations. In the case of H. G. Wells’ The Time Machine, many changes were made to the plot which affected the order of the events and overall mood of the film. However, many times changes are made to help the audience easily understand the plot and to do so in a short amount of time. Often, these changes take away from the original story of the book leaving those viewers who read the book disappointed. In the case of The Time Machine, it may differ enormously from its original, but in the end these changes were not made in error.
